U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier 2015

Woodmont LogoFor 28 out of the last 29 years our place, Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, has hosted the 36-hole final stage men’s U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying. The USGA has even thrown in a few Women’s Sectional Qualifiers along the way for good measure.

.

Open Venue Flags and USGA Thank You Citations ring the rafters of our golf shop

OpenQualifyingMemorabilia 1Our members have been blessed with the opportunity to see some of the best players in the land play up close and personal on the home turf. Over the years tour champions like O’Meara, Stadler, Freddie Boom-Boom, Larry Mize, Bubba (apparently there is a spooky connection between Woodmont qualifiers and success at Augusta), Corey Pavin, Tom Kite, Fred Funk, Curtis Strange, Billy Andrade, as well as many of the top amateurs of this era have found their way to the U.S. Open Championship through our neck of the woods. Walking with them…no gallery ropes…watching them play shots on a championship course we are totally familiar with has afforded us a unique opportunity to appreciate the awesome talent level of these guys.

The goal is to reach the masterpiece of Chambers Bay on Puget Sound

.

This year’s field of 56 pros and amateurs were vying for 3 spots at Chambers Bay in two weeks. I had the opportunity to walk and score the final 18 holes for the USGA. Wireless Galaxy tablet in hand we provided the USGA with semi-live hole-by-hole scoring of the final round to populate their web portal with developing scores throughout the afternoon. Pretty awesome experience when you realize that the competitors themselves, as well as interested parties across the country, are hanging on the accuracy of your scoring to keep up with the action.

My Bernard Darwin/Francis Ouimet moment penciling the strokes as we went

HoleByHole WorksheetMy group included Denny McCarthy, who along with PGA Tour pro and ex-Navy officer Billy Hurley III, took medalist honors at 6-under par after two trips around our North Course in blustery and hot D.C. summer conditions. The final spot went to Timothy O’Neal who won a three-hole playoff over Joshua Persons-both had finished at 2-under.

McCarthy is a true hot-shot amateur. Born and raised in this area he built an impressive golf resume as an All-Met schoolboy star playing for Georgetown Prep. He has been a stand out on the University of Virginia golf team the last four years, reaching the semi-finals in last year’s U.S. Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club. His familiarity with Woodmont’s North Course from his high school days certainly helped him in today’s winning performance.

McCarthy’s Cavalier head cover was laying out and enjoying the sun all day

Whats In The BagAfter a 2-under par round in the morning McCarthy was two-back of the qualifying number when he teed off on the 590-yard Par 5 tenth hole to start the afternoon round. He promptly put a swerving hook left-of-left near the 18th tee but showed his survival instincts sewing a low recovery through the trees to about 100 yards out. Wedging to 20 feet he promptly sunk the putt to make an unlikely birdie. The next eight holes was a collection of wayward tee shots and brilliant recoveries as he made eight pars to reach the turn at 3-under in fourth place-one back from a qualifying playoff.

Informed by his caddie at the turn of where he stood you could see Denny’s bulldog resolve take over as he birdied 4 of the first 5 holes on our front nine to take the bull by the horns. The most impressive of the lot was a rope 240 yard long iron into a Clark Kent phone booth pin position on our arduous par three second. The five footer hit the bottom of the tin and he was in full birdie gallop at that point. His final birdie on the Par 5 fifth was three wood, long iron to 30 feet, perfect lag leaving a tap in birdie to take the lead at 7-under.

Playing the next three on steady cruise control Denny took no gambles giving himself birdie putts on every green but accepting pars as his friend trying to get to the house with the lead.

Rock solid finish all the way to the end to secure his spot

Denny McCarthyOur ninth is a 485-yard behemoth Par 4 from the tips with OB right and lots of tree trouble left, scorecard wrecking double-bogies lurking for those without judgment. Three wood to 220, long iron safely to the front left apron, a pitch and a couple of putts Denny smartly accepted a dropped shot to finish at 6-under tied with Billy Hurley for the top spot of the day.

Hurley 66-72, McCarthy 70-68 punch their tickets to Chambers Bay with 138

Scoreboard 1Scoreboard2

After the cards were signed and the scores were posted I ran into McCarthy’s father milling with his supporters near the scorer’s tent. He was talking on his cell phone when my comment to him “Making hotel reservations in Tacoma for next weekend?” generated a knowing wry smile.

Who knows if this is the beginning of big things for McCarthy over the next year. But given what his contemporary Jordan Spieth has done recently you never know. All I know is that I witnessed a gifted young player producing 18 holes of his best golf in a pressure-packed situation. It was the stuff of a champion and a great thing to see first hand.

Birdseye View of Chambers Bay

Chambers Bay LogoThe USGA has gone all-in on the technological possibilities in presenting the visit of this year’s U.S. Open to Chambers Bay. From this link on their website you get a thorough and interactive view of what the players will experience when they tee it up at Chambers Bay for this year’s next major.

Chambers Bay is a very linksy styled course on Puget Sound manufactured by Robert Trent Jones Jr out of a cavernous pit left by an abandoned sand and gravel mine. It is almost a cross between Pacific Dunes and Whistling Straits given that it took an estimated 100,000 truck loads to move 1.4 million cubic yards of dirt and sand to create the dramatic playing topography confronting the players. The USGA providing a full HD quality view of the detail of the course is enthralling and informative.

Creative genius…..not the pure hand of nature…….

Embed from Getty Images

.

This will all be about playing tactics for the winner. Chambers Bay will confront the competitors with sweeping hard and fast sand based fairways confined by broken ground and massive sandy waste areas. Picking the proper club off the tee to get to the advantageous landing area based on the day’s wind influence and pin position will be key.

The green complexes are….how do I put this….complex. Fescue grasses on fairways and greens make discerning the green from the approach area very difficult. The orientation of the greens to the drastic topography and waste areas around them means that shaping the approach shot and using the ground as your friend will critical to getting birdie opportunities on undulating greens with well defined pin placement areas. This is not conducive to the hoist and stick it style of approach most professionals prefer.

With dramatic scale….

Embed from Getty Images

.

From the first page of the link dig into the detail of each hole through tabs for Hole Insights, Photo, and Flyover Video. The Hole insights looks like a yardage book map of the hole with an accompanying descriptive. The vivid photo is what will bait you into the Flyover Video. The video includes a knowing voice that explains the various tactical options the players will choose from. For the Millenial in you there is even a button for “Play This Hole” which is essentially a sophisticated video game that allows you to play the course. Very cool feature if you have youthful patience.

And stunning backdrops…remnants remain of it’s less glamorous mining days

.

Bringing the U.S. Open to a municipal facility with a sand based links style golf course was a bold move on the part of the USGA. This tool they have provided will prepare you for a fuller appreciation of what the players are complaining about when they step into the unknown at Chambers Bay for the U.S. Open Championship.

Reflections: A Visit To The Masters

Masters LogoThe coronation of Jordan Spieth as the next Lion King provided the perfect backdrop for our first experience at Augusta National. Watching him handle himself with a combination of athletic virtuosity and personal grace was something to behold. His arrival to contend with the Irish Prince portends great things for the game in the post-Eldrick era.

We witnessed a lot of this on Friday and Saturday

Embed from Getty Images

.

Masstahs1 (1)For us it started early in the morning on Thursday while catching our flight down to Atlanta. We knew that every person wearing a Titlelist hat or a FootJoy wind shirt was heading for the show. A pair of millennials from South Boston were handing out their own version of Master’s memorabilia.

iPhone/Camera held hostage in the glove compartment

iPhone/Camera held hostage in the glove box

There are Masters Do’s and Don’ts and you do not want to do the Don’ts. On real tournament days no cell phones, cameras, outside food, unauthorized chairs (those with arm rests), backpacks, or even handbags over 10 inches across. No autograph seeking on the course…no matter how cute your 10-year old is. The age of Osama has brought the mandatory metal detector moment for each patron walking through the gate….at least you don’t have to take off your belt and shoes.

Once on the grounds the first impression is how expansively green, impeccably manicured, and drop dead gorgeous the place is. The flora is beyond description, the azaleas are so oversized as to make you think they were genetically engineered. The stark white bunkering accentuates the emerald fairways, every blade of grass has been trimmed in the last 18 hours. If it were not for tens of thousands of patrons meandering about you could swear the place was originally a tree nursery…..which it was.

Augusta National pays homage to all the elements of nature’s beauty
Embed from Getty Images

.

Even the pine straw under the towering stands of pine trees seems like it has been fluffed for the day’s play.

And meticulously manages whatever nature cannot handle herself

Embed from Getty Images

.
The second impression is how hilly the place is-it is by no means an easy walk even if the most cumbersome thing you are carrying is a beer and a pimento/cheese sandwich. The elevation changes begin instantly off the tee of #1 and #10 ….Franz Klammer would feel at home staring over the edge from the tenth tee box.

From the high ground of the 1st tee the property plummets below eventually down to Amen Corner
Embed from Getty Images

.

More startling than the elevation changes of the holes are the intense topographical features in the green complexes. HD does not do it justice. The bunkers, swales, and hollows that surround the greens collect any timid approaches. The severe slopes and terracing of the green surfaces themselves require a dramatically different approach line for each day’s pin placement. One cannot fail to recognize that these complex green arrangements seriously mitigate the intended size of the driving area on the seemingly sprawling fairways. Tactically considered pinpoint driving position is the ticket to birdie opportunities at Augusta National. Those approaches that do not work out lead to diabolical up-and-down challenges.

Spieth’s Friday approach pitch into the 2nd Green-it was anything but simple

.

It does not take long to realize that the entire emphasis of the membership that put on this major championship is to make the patron experience as enjoyable as possible. Clifford Roberts, an early adopter of the term “Continuous Quality Improvement”, set this standard from the tournament’s inception in 1934. To this day, a almost 30 years after his death, the powers that be still ask “what would Cliff think” when they are making a decision about the management of the event.

Embed from Getty Images

.

This is embraced by the Green Jacket volunteers, wealthy CEO’s and celebrities whose weekly pay stub have six figures on them yet freely offer their time for a week to answer questions and offer advice to anyone patron who needs it. Every employee from retail clerks, to food service people, to the folks who wipe down the sinks in the public restrooms immediately after you finish washing your hands ask you if you are enjoying your day at The Masters. This is a total commitment to the patron experience.

Condi explaining to Lindsey Vonn that this might not have been the most appropriate clothing decision for a golf tournament

.

Masters rules and traditions are unique and give this tournament a character all it’s own. The limited number of tickets insures that all patrons can move about comfortably to follow the golf. There are plenty of planned and designated places from which to view the action. The grandstands often sit in places where you can watch the action on multiple holes. These are not your typical bleachers but have comfy molded backed seats where you can sit and watch for hours.

.

Masters ChairOr you can spend about fifty bucks to buy the Authorized Master’s Canvas Fold-up Chair to take advantage of a very hospitable practice at Augusta. You write your name on the back of your chair in Sharpie and then when the gates open in the morning each day you walk……do not run…..to the place where you would like your Authorized Master’s Chair to remain all day until you are ready to sit in it.

As you can see there are large designated viewing areas to place your Authorized Master’s Chair which will guarantee you an intimate view of the action. The coolest part, no one will sit in your chair all day. You can place it, spend the morning walking the course following your favorites, and return to the chair that awaits you next to the 16th green to watch the final groups come through in the late afternoon. It is like having your own personal reserved box seat.

Embed from Getty Images

.

The regular grounds ticket comes with free parking across the street from the club. When was the last professional sporting event you attended where the parking was free? The food pavilions are plentiful about the course with a full selection of sandwiches, munchies, drinks, and beer at 1978 prices.   Take a gander at the price list:

.
Sandwiches: $1.50 – $3.00
Soda: $1.50
Water/iced tea: $1.50
Beer: $4.00 domestic, $5.00 imported (Not available on the main course after 4 p.m.)
Coffee: $1

.
They even have fresh fruit, nuts, and a pack of baby carrots for 75 cents…..you cannot find baby carrots at a Wawa for 75 cents. The lines can be long but the logistics are so efficient that your wait is rarely longer than 5 to 10 minutes at times of peak demand. You have not seen operational efficiency like this outside of Disneyworld.

The cheap beer does encourage lots of domestic and imported consumption, which should surprise no one at a sporting event. Apparently there is an unwritten tradition among male patrons to collect the commemorative plastic cups with the Masters logo so by days end you see guys carrying a stack of ten cups with the eleventh beer of the day propped in the top of the stack. These are the same guys who had the beer can pyramids in their frat rooms in college. It is high anxiety in the concession line around 3:55 when the taps are closing at 4 p.m. sharp.

.
Masters Price Tag 2The golf shops situated on the grounds are equally impressive both in the scale of their offerings and the efficiency of the operation. You can spend $500 on your Platinum Amex Card on hats, shirts, towels, and a few other Masters chotchkies faster than you can say “don’t leave home without it”. Not missing a beat they provide a free bag check service just past the register area so you can bunk your purchases for later pick-up after the tournament viewing is over.

Masters Badge 2If you are truly connected, blessed, or just wealthy you can get the uber Berckmans Place Ticket which gives you access to Augusta’s latest upscale enclave. They added this permanent structure in 2013 that easily covers 90,000 square feet. It includes half a dozen distinct waiter served dining areas covered by the price of the Berckmans ticket, walls of Masters history, a golf shop with fine Italian golf shirts, areas from which to watch the tournament, and a practice putting area that’s includes replicas of the 7th, 14th, and 16th greens at Augusta National kept at tournament speeds. After 20 minutes of putting these greens you will have new respect for the phrase “these guys are good”.

But the cacophonies of fan exuberance were cascading over the pines from all directions as birdies and eagles were aplenty.  Sitting beside the green on the Par 3 16th late Saturday afternoon we witnessed birdie bedlam three times in fifteen minutes.  The pin was on the top shelf front right in a position that no one could seem to keep their approach and no birdies were being yielded.

It began with Phil burying a 40-foot snake up the slope….the pines reverberated

.

5 minutes later Justin’s bunker recovery gets nothing but net

Embed from Getty Images

.

Then the tournament leaders Charlie Hoffman and Jordan Spieth hit lawn darts to about 7 and 15 feet respectively right in front of the hole.  Jordan buried his putt for birdie which lengthened Hoffman’s attempt by about 20 feet and his lead by another stroke when Charlie failed to convert.  The crowd at this point was in full hysteria….it felt like a Springsteen concert at the Jersey Shore.  Spieth would carry a four-shot lead into Sunday’s final round.

Tiger had his moments but concealed obstacles were lurking everywhere

Embed from Getty Images

.

Sunday proved to be anything but a cake walk but playing beside a major champion in Justin Rose Jordan made 6 birdies to post a round of 70, tie the tournament record at 18-under, and win what is likely to be the first of many majors.  At the end of the day Simba seemed to take his first steps up to the mountain top.

At 18 this familiar gesture seemed like Deja Vu all over again…..

Protect The Practice Grounds

A reminder from the guys @College_Golfers….whether you are grinding away with your mid-irons on the range or refining your finesse pitching at the short game area you want to minimize your divot footprint by following the straight line practice protocol on the left.

Proper Range Divots

For each subsequent shot place your ball one inch behind your previous divot. It will eliminate divot scatter and make a huge difference to the long term maintenance of your practice grounds.

Nona BlueAs anyone knows who has gone on a group golf trip the only thing secondary to the course venues in the eating establishments for dinner. If you are vacationing in Orlando then you owe it to yourself to check out Nona Blue-Modern Tavern just a pitching wedge from the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.

This place was opened in the Spring of 2013 by restauranteurs Joe Davi and Bill Bona who tactically attracted Graeme McDowell to invest in the venture and give it some PGA Tour allure. These guys had a focused concept to create a casual tavern with a robust menu of comfort food-a little piece of Killarney heaven in South Florida.

Postcard From Rustic Canyon

imagesAbout 40 miles north of L.A. set in an arroyo between foothills covered with arid vegetation Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, and Geoff Shackelford built a minimalist municipal golf course that screams brown is beautiful. The vistas are straight out of Bonanza. Standing at the bag drop you fully expect Ben Cartright, Hoss, and Little Joe to come hurtling down the hillside on horseback in a cloud of dust to welcome you to the Ponderosa.

ClubhouseThe understated clubhouse sets the theme for your day

Range 1The range and short game area leave little doubt this is a municipal facility……

Short Game Area…….but what you need to prepare for what’s ahead is all there

Practice Putting Shares With 18 GreenA generous practice green shares space with the flag awaiting play coming down to the 18th green

The design trio was determined to do little to disrupt the natural appearance of the ground planning to “place the course onto the site instead of erecting a course there”. Very little dirt was moved and a dry wash that runs down the heart of this valley full of sage, scrub brush, and a kind of nasty desert broom was used as the primary hazard feature in creating this theater for a rustic golf experience.

RC Backdrop on Back SideThe high end of the property you can see the source that feeds the wash

RC #1 FaultA dry sandy fault bisects the playing area the last 140 yards in on the first hole

RC #11 Wash Approach From GreenThe wash consistently presents itself as the primary obstacle to negotiate through the day

RC #6 Tee ViewThey achieved their goal as holes meld into the natural flow of the land

In his book “Grounds For Golf” Shackelford says of the design, “the emphasis will be on strategy that uses natural features as a priority, with bunkers added to compliment the unique contours”.
RC #13 Approach ViewYou can see a few bunkers were raised to augment the challenge when necessary
Bunker PlayThey may not seem that difficult…….
RC #12 Greenside Bunker…but some of them will exact a serious toll for wayward approaches
RC #9 GreenSprawling, undulating putting surfaces bleed into the surround fringes…they would feel at home on any links course across the pond

RC #11 Short Game ApproachErgo the ground game is often the better approach for getting close

RC #12 Greenside GateIn keeping with the theme the trimmings are right out of a dude ranch

Sand Cart Path and RailingCarts follow paths on which horses would feel comfortable to tread

RC #10 Cactus BedNatural features were left to adorn the playing area

RC #10 Cactus Kathy BallThis one had an attraction for an NXT Tour ball

RC #10 Cactus Kathy Play
A stroke, a drop, and play on….,,,,

RC #10 Green Back View….to a 50 yard long lap pool of a green that looks straight out of the Golden Age of Design

RC #16 Approach View 1Coming down valley on #16…. it is all natural, no artificial ingredients

RC #3 Tee View
This place is worth the trek it takes to get here.  Set against the foothills, the combination of the flowing fairways, natural wash, and a few punitive extras make Rustic Canyon a simple yet surreal golf challenge.
